Farming footage and archives

Post by mgpoupinel »

Hi there,
I am currently on the lookout for any farming footage from mid 20s onward. Ideally any public information film but I'm staying quite open! Would any of you know where I could find the latter? Any websites, organisations, museums etc. (I have already contacted TheMERL).
I hope we can get the ball rolling! Thank you in advance.

For the NE of England I suggest you contact Beamish Museum
https://www.beamish.org.uk/
which has extensive archives including films.

Similarly, Weald and Downland Museum may have material for Southern counties and Avoncroft Museum for the Midlands.

A number of resources for agricultural film footage exist, but a couple in particular spring to mind.

First is the British Agricultural Archive Film Unit at http://bufvc.ac.uk/archives/index.php/collection/84. Their oldest film is from 1908 but the bulk of the collection spans the 1930s to 1960s.

Another terrific resource is the East Anglian Film Archive at http://www.eafa.org.uk/default.aspx. This has a vast agricultural element and nearly all the films have been digitised, enabling online viewing. Very easy to get carried away!

There are several more for which I have details. You don't say what the purpose of your enquiry is. Some archives are more open than others to viewing and use of footage. Feel free to message me if you need some further guidance or additional leads!

You could try the Somerset Museum of Rural Life. Good luck

Hello! I'm also currently doing some work on agricultural films, and was wondering if you have had any contact with the British Agricultural Archive Film Unit? There's no email or website listed on the BUFVC, only a phone number, and I've had no luck in getting through so far!
